University of Nizwa Celebrates Major Achievement with 2024 ASFC Award
The University of Nizwa has reached a remarkable milestone in scientific research, with Dr. Abdullah Al-Hatmi, Assistant Professor and Head of the Microbiology Laboratory at the Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center, receiving the prestigious 2024 Arab Society for Fungal Conservation (ASFC) Award.
The announcement at the ASFC headquarters in Egypt recognises Dr Al-Hatmi’s outstanding contributions to fungal conservation—a vital field in biodiversity and ecosystem research. This honour showcases the University’s leadership in advancing scientific studies and reinforces Oman’s growing influence in ecological research.
Fungi, an essential yet underexplored component of life on Earth, play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. With over 1.5 million species estimated worldwide but only 5% identified, the field offers vast opportunities for discovery. The University of Nizwa has prioritised this area through the Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center, conducting pioneering studies that contribute to global efforts in biodiversity conservation.
“This recognition reflects the dedication and progress of Oman’s research sector,” Dr. Al-Hatmi remarked. “It underscores the University’s focus on supporting innovative work that addresses critical knowledge gaps in biodiversity.”
The University of Nizwa’s achievement in securing this award underscores its position as a centre for impactful research and its commitment to global collaboration in scientific exploration.
