Current Awareness: A Library Service that Saves Time and Effort
Mohammed Al Husaini Main Library
With advancements in technology, researchers now have global access to extensive library services. They can access information sources immediately after, or even before, publication. Libraries aim to streamline researchers' efforts by leveraging technology to offer new facilities and services. This article explores the current awareness service in libraries, designed to keep researchers up to date with the latest developments in their field without the need for constant manual checks. Key features of this service include:
- Access to tables of contents from relevant journals.
- Regular updates on new resources in databases.
- Information on recent works by other authors or organizations.
- Citations of their work, including who is citing it and which documents reference it.
Different methods are used to deliver current awareness, and the University of Nizwa Library provides several services:
1. Saving Search Queries: Researchers can prepare a search strategy using scientific terms, Boolean operators (and, or, not), and search limiters. Once the strategy is saved, future searches can be executed instantly with the stored query, saving time and effort.
2. Creating Query URL Links: Researchers can save search strategies as electronic links. These links can be shared, embedded into e-learning platforms, or uploaded to websites, allowing easy access to relevant studies for both researchers and students.
3. Email Alerts: This popular feature allows researchers to receive regular updates on new information from library subscriptions, journal tables of contents, or citation counts. Researchers can set up alerts by defining their search strategy, choosing notification frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly), and specifying their email address. Alerts will then keep researchers informed as if they had a personal research assistant.
4. Creating RSS Feeds for Research Efficiency
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a technology originally developed for journalism to distribute news updates. In the context of a library service, RSS feeds serve a similar purpose by keeping researchers informed about the latest content from scientific journals, databases, and other resources.
Here’s how it works: After formulating a research question, you can generate an RSS feed link related to your query. This link can then be added to an RSS reader, which is available through various email services and dedicated applications. There are numerous RSS readers available, both free and commercial. Popular free options include those provided by Google and Microsoft.
At the University of Nizwa Library, our goal is to streamline the research process and save researchers' time and effort. We achieve this by adopting cutting-edge technologies and digital innovations, continuously enhancing our library services to support academic success. Whether accessing resources in person or online, our priority is to facilitate scientific advancement for all our users.
