Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been steadily making substantial progress into various facets of our lives, revolutionizing the way tasks are carried out. Among the realms profoundly influenced by AI is education, where it is on the brink of redefining the educational landscape ranging from personalized learning experiences to streamlining administrative tasks. The influence of AI on education is diverse and undeniable. The author’s objective is to shed light on and delve into AI’s applications, and its potential impact on various dimensions of education through a series of articles.
Let’s start by understanding the concept of Artificial Intelligence. In simple terms, Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to a discipline focused on replicating human intelligence in computers, machines, and other devices enabling them to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks encompass learning, logical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, language understanding, and decision making.
In the field of education, there has been a growing utilization of artificial intelligence that extends beyond the traditional perception of AI as a supercomputer, encompassing embedded computer systems as well. Before the advent of computers and related technologies, instructors and students were involved in teaching and learning through manual methods, relying solely on natural human effort.
Many research studies have confirmed that AI has extensively been adopted and used within the realm of education, primarily by higher educational institutions in diverse manifestations. Initially, AI took the form of computer and computer related technologies. It later evolved into web-based and online education systems, and ultimately with the use of embedded computer systems, alongside other technologies, including humanoid robots and web-based chatbots to perform instructors’ duties and functions independently or with instructors. Through these platforms, educators have gained the capability to carry out various administrative tasks, such as assessing and grading student assignments with increased effectiveness and efficiency, resulting in elevated teaching quality. On the flip side, due to the utilization of machine learning and adaptability, the educational materials and curriculum have been tailored and individualized to align with the requirements of students. This approach has resulted in increased engagement and retention, consequently enhancing the overall quality of the learning experience for students.
A review of the academic sources revealed that AI has indeed been applied in educational institutions in various capacities. AI-driven education encompasses intelligent pedagogical approaches, innovative virtual learning environments, and the utilization of data analysis and prediction techniques. AI has notably enhanced the efficiency of the administrative tasks like assessing students’ work, grading assignments, and providing feedback through the automation facilitated by web-based platforms and computer programs.
Further insights gleaned from diverse sources emphasize that the integration of artificial intelligence in education offers an opportunity to overcome geographical limitations imposed by national and international borders. This is achieved by harnessing the vast resources available on the internet and the world wide web. Engaging in online learning or utilizing web-based educational platforms ensuring that the educational materials are accessible from any corner of the globe. Additionally, the incorporation of AI-features such as language translation tools facilitates tailored learning experiences adapting to each students’ unique capabilities.
Artificial intelligence has also found applications in other aspects of the education sector, such as curriculum and content development, and instructional techniques. These applications leverage various technologies, including virtual reality, web-based platforms, robotics, video conferencing, audiovisual resources, and 3-D technology. These innovations have significantly enhanced the learning process, allowing teachers to be more effective and efficient while affording students a personalized and more enriched educational journey.
