The University Launches UNESCO Chair in Aflaj, and Al-Ghafri is his professor

On Wednesday, May 5, 2021 AD, the University of Nizwa approved the document of establishing the UNESCO Chair for Aflaj Studies (Archaeological Hydrology) at the university. And Dr. Abdullah bin Saif Al-Ghafri Professor of the Chair.

 

 

 

 

The approval of establishing the UNESCO Chair for the Studies of Aflaj (Archeohydrology) confirms the Sultanate keenness on the sustainability of aflaj. Due to its social, environmental and economic impact; With the aim of promoting an integrated approach to research, education and training in the field of falaj systems and related studies; Especially since the UNESCO Chair in Aflaj Studies is the first of its kind in the world.

 

 

The importance of establishing the chair is based on the need of research project to manage groundwater, water management, and monitor aflaj irrigation systems; through the exchange of data and expertise, information and funding. The teaching component will be aimed at developing a degree program in Aquatic Archeology. Then it will move to higher grades as needed. The Chair will create a distance learning platform that will provide training for Aflaj studies in cooperation with international partners.

 

 

The UNESCO Chair seeks to be a leading global research and academic center in applying high standards of research practices in aflaj systems. Its policy is committed to encouraging research related to aflaj, providing support to field scientists, and educational services and activities, and enhancing community communication and participation in the service of aflaj.
