A delegation from the University of Nizwa recently conducted a series of visits to prominent industrial organizations in Sohar as part of the University’s efforts to deepen cooperation with Oman’s industrial sector. The delegation brought together academics from the College of Engineering and Architecture and the Energy and Minerals Research Center, with a particular focus on identifying opportunities for applied research, innovation, industrial training, and knowledge exchange.

The program began with a visit to United Solar Polysilicon, where the University team was introduced to the company’s manufacturing facilities and production activities. The delegation learned about the different stages of production, beginning with raw materials and continuing through the various processing and manufacturing operations associated with the solar energy industry. A tour of the facility also enabled the academics to observe major production units and gain a closer understanding of the technologies, equipment, and industrial processes used at the plant.

Alongside the technical tour, discussions were held with company representatives on possible areas of cooperation with the University of Nizwa. The meeting focused particularly on industrial and research challenges that could benefit from academic expertise and applied scientific research. Potential collaboration in developing innovative solutions to enhance industrial processes, efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement was also discussed.

The delegation subsequently visited Sohar Port and Freezone, where members received an overview of its major services, logistics infrastructure, industrial activities, and its significant role in supporting the national economy of the Sultanate of Oman. The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the relationship between the Port, the Freezone, and the wider industrial environment in Sohar.

During the discussions, representatives highlighted the potential for greater engagement between Sohar Port and Freezone and higher education institutions across Oman. Opportunities were identified in areas including applied research, innovation, student training, knowledge exchange, industrial engagement, and research and development. Both sides emphasized the value of establishing stronger and sustainable links between universities and industry so that academic expertise can contribute to addressing practical industrial challenges.

As another component of the visit, the University team met with a specialist from Jindal Steel. The meeting provided a comprehensive introduction to the company’s industrial activities and its contribution to Oman’s economy. The delegation was briefed on the principal stages involved in steel production, the range of steel products manufactured, and their applications in different industrial sectors.

The discussion also addressed the company’s environmental responsibilities and the measures considered within its industrial activities to support environmentally responsible and sustainable practices. The meeting concluded with an emphasis on arranging a future visit to the Jindal Steel manufacturing facility, which would allow University academics and students to observe steel production processes directly and explore further possibilities for research, technical cooperation, and industrial training.

These industrial engagements form part of the University of Nizwa’s continuing commitment to building productive relationships with Oman’s growing industrial sectors. Through the College of Engineering and Architecture and the Energy and Minerals Research Center, the University seeks to connect academic expertise and scientific research with practical industrial needs while expanding opportunities for innovation and knowledge transfer.

Such cooperation can also provide valuable training and professional development opportunities for students, strengthen their exposure to real industrial environments, and enhance the competencies required by the future labor market. At the same time, stronger university–industry partnerships can support collaborative research and development initiatives and enable academic researchers to contribute practical solutions to industrial challenges.

The initiative reflects the University of Nizwa’s broader mission to advance research, innovation, and sustainable development while strengthening partnerships with industry. It also contributes to preparing highly qualified graduates capable of supporting Oman’s future economic and technological development in alignment with the priorities of Oman Vision 2040.
