What if the next breakthrough in protecting our planet begins with an algorithm? Artificial intelligence is opening new possibilities for sustainability by helping researchers transform complex data into predictions and practical decisions. Recent studies demonstrate its potential in weather forecasting, renewable energy planning, and hydrogen production. One promising example is GenCast, a machine learning weather model developed by Price et al. (2025). In their evaluation, it outperformed the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ ensemble system on 97.2% of 1,320 prediction targets. It also improved forecasts of extreme weather and wind power production. Better forecasts can support decisions about when renewable electricity will be available and how to prepare for hazardous conditions. (doi.org) AI is also advancing research into green hydrogen, which can be produced by splitting water using renewable electricity. Yang et al. (2025) developed machine learning models to predict the performance of solid oxide electrolysis cells. Their preferred model achieved an R² above 0.95 across three predicted outputs, including hydrogen production rate. They then combined it with an optimization algorithm to identify promising operating conditions. These findings demonstrate strong predictive performance within the study, rather than a guaranteed improvement in every industrial facility. (sciopen.com) Together, these studies illustrate a powerful opportunity: forecasting renewable energy availability and improving hydrogen production could become complementary parts of cleaner energy systems. Turning that opportunity into measurable environmental benefits requires reliable data, engineering expertise, and testing under real operating conditions. For Oman, a compelling research direction would be to investigate how AI could coordinate renewable electricity with hydrogen production under local conditions. Universities can contribute through interdisciplinary projects that connect computer science, engineering, and environmental research. Ultimately, AI’s environmental value lies in what it helps people achieve: better decisions, more efficient processes, and useful scientific discoveries. By combining intelligent algorithms with human expertise, we can turn data into action and innovation into a greener tomorrow.
