Omani researcher wins national award for 3D-printed wound-healing innovation

A pioneering scientific study using 3D printing to treat chronic wounds has won first place at Oman’s National Research Award 2025, highlighting the growing strength of applied medical research in the Sultanate.

Dr Sulaiman Al Hashmi, Head of the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory at the University of Nizwa’s Natural and Medical Sciences Research Centre, received the top award for his research on developing an active 3D-printed wound dressing designed to enhance tissue regeneration, particularly for patients with diabetes.

The study focuses on regenerative medicine, combining advanced biomaterials with controlled drug delivery to move beyond traditional wound dressings towards therapeutic solutions that actively promote healing and reduce inflammation. Early laboratory and animal model results have shown promising outcomes, although the treatment is still at an experimental stage.

Dr Al Hashmi said the award reflects both his long research journey and the wider maturity of Oman’s scientific ecosystem, noting that national support for applied research aligns closely with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. He also praised the University of Nizwa’s research environment, which he said is built on trust in researchers, institutional support and encouragement of ambitious scientific ideas.

Looking ahead, Dr Al Hashmi said future work will focus on advancing regenerative medicine and stem cell research, refining therapeutic models and expanding research partnerships locally and internationally, with the ultimate goal of translating scientific innovation into real clinical benefit for patients.
