University of Nizwa Translation Students Visit Oman TV and Oman Observer

Translation students from the University of Nizwa, enrolled in the Current Events course, participated in an educational field visit to Oman TV and Oman Observer in Muscat. The visit, supervised by the course lecturer, Mr Tammy Monono, aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to the Omani media environment and professional newsroom practices.
At Oman TV, the students were welcomed by staff members who offered a comprehensive tour of the facility. Yusuf Al Jabri and Ahmed introduced the group to various production studios and explained the process behind preparing and broadcasting television programmes.
The students also met technical engineers who outlined the operational requirements and challenges of working in broadcast media. The visit included observing a live studio broadcast, giving students direct insight into real-time newsroom operations.
The second part of the field trip took place at Oman Observer, where staff members continued the experiential learning programme. Although the newsroom is currently undergoing renovation, the team provided a detailed explanation of editorial workflows, including front-page editing, headline writing and story development. Waleed Al Jahwari and Khaled Al Belushi led the session, offering practical demonstrations and answering student questions.
During the visit, the Editor-in-Chief, Mr Abdullah bin Salim Al Shueili, met with the students and spoke about the structure of the newsroom and the responsibilities of the editorial team. He emphasised the importance of reading widely, engaging in dialogue, and seeking knowledge from experienced professionals. He also encouraged students to remain persistent in pursuing their academic and professional goals.
The field trip concluded with students expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn directly from media practitioners and gain a clearer understanding of the realities of working in television and print journalism.
