The University of Nizwa has achieved second place at the gold level in the National Health-Promoting Universities Evaluation for 2024–2025, the Ministry of Health has announced. The assessment recognises higher education institutions that actively foster sustainable and healthy learning environments for students, faculty, and staff.
The evaluation, conducted between 27 April and 1 May 2025, forms part of a national initiative to promote health, wellbeing, and sustainable lifestyles across Omani universities. Institutions are assessed on their policies, programmes, and initiatives aimed at improving physical, mental, and social health within the academic community.
In preparation for the evaluation, the University of Nizwa formed a dedicated team led by Dr Ahmed Al Kharousi, with members representing various units across the university. The team coordinated efforts to demonstrate the institution’s health promotion initiatives and ensure a comprehensive representation of campus-wide programmes.
Dr Ahmed Al Kharousi said he is proud of this achievement and believes that it represents a step forward toward achieving a higher level of recognition, while leaving room for continued improvement.
The gold-level ranking places the University of Nizwa among the top universities in Oman for health promotion, underscoring the increasing importance of wellbeing in higher education. According to the Ministry of Health, participating universities are evaluated across multiple criteria, including physical activity programmes, mental health support, nutrition initiatives, and environmental sustainability measures.
Health-promoting universities are recognised globally as institutions that integrate health into their academic, social, and physical environments, supporting the holistic development of their communities. For students, this translates into better access to wellness programmes, safer learning environments, and initiatives designed to reduce stress and encourage healthy habits.
The University of Nizwa joins a growing network of institutions in Oman and internationally that prioritise the health and wellbeing of their academic communities. The Ministry of Health noted that this evaluation is part of a broader strategy to embed public health principles within higher education and encourage universities to lead by example in promoting healthy lifestyles.
Looking ahead, the University of Nizwa plans to expand its health promotion initiatives, including further engagement with students and staff and the development of innovative programmes that address both mental and physical wellbeing. Officials also expressed hope that the recognition will inspire other universities in Oman to strengthen their health-focused policies and practices.
