Dean Salem Al Touby Leads Global Nursing Accreditation Talks in Helsinki
Dr. Salem Al Touby, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Nizwa, played a pivotal role in high-level international council meetings in Helsinki this week, presenting a landmark global accreditation document for nursing programmes.
Held in conjunction with the 2025 International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress, which welcomed over 7,000 participants from across the globe, the meetings focused on shaping the future of nursing education through global cooperation and unified standards.
Dr. Al Touby, who represents the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and serves as a member of the ICN Education Advisory Committee, chairs the task force responsible for the new Global Nursing Programme Accreditation Document.
The document, developed by committee members from all WHO regions, establishes clear international standards for nursing education. It addresses core components, including academic quality, clinical preparedness, faculty development, and institutional accountability.
“This initiative marks a significant milestone in unifying nursing education globally,” said Dr. Al Touby. “It’s about raising the bar—ensuring nurses everywhere are prepared to meet modern healthcare demands, regardless of where they train.”
The ICN Board carefully selected Dr. Al Touby based on his substantial contributions to nursing education and his leadership in the region.
His active role not only elevates the status of the University of Nizwa on the international stage but also brings tangible benefits to the College of Health Sciences, opening doors for accreditation, collaboration, and capacity-building.
With this document now guiding global standards, Oman’s voice, through Dr. Al Touby, is helping shape the next chapter of nursing education around the world.
